H.E. Paul Kagame
President of Rwanda
President Paul Kagame was born in Rwanda, but lived as a refugee in Uganda for over 30 years. From 1990, he led the struggle to liberate Rwanda, and in 1994 his forces halted the Genocide against the Tutsi, which claimed over a million victims. He was sworn in for a third term as President of Rwanda in August 2017. Under his leadership, Rwanda has made major strides in national reconciliation, human development, women’s rights, and economic growth. In July 2016, African Heads of State appointed President Kagame to lead the institutional reform of the African Union, which he has been elected to chair in 2018.
