Mary Teuw Niane
Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of Senegal

Professor Mary Teuw Niane is a Senegalese mathematician and Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of Senegal since 2012. He obtained his PhD in Mathematical Science in 1990 with honorable mention from the jury. After nearly 10 years lecturing at the Cheikh Anta Diop University, he joined the Saint-Louis University to participate in the academic and institutional development of the university.

He got his professorship at the Training and Research Unit of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at his new University, where he peers elected him twice at the helm of the Unit.

Professor Niane is also a founding member and board member of the Senegal Academy of Science and Technology, former West Africa Regional Director Zone II of the “Initiative du Millénaire pour la Science en Mathématiques pour l’Afrique.”

His initiatives and rich experience earned him the confidence of the government, leading to his appointment to lead the commission “Carte Universitaire” of Senegal in 2002. In 2007, he was elected Rector of Gaston Berger University.

A fierce promoter of STEM education, Professor Niane is the recipient of several honorary distinctions including Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Lion of Senegal, Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques in France and Commander in the International Order of African Academic Palms of the African and Malagasy Council of Higher Education (CAMES).
